Women’s Hungarian Cup: Eger and Szentes advance without difficulty

October 9, 2022

Following the completion of a round of qualifying matches over the weekend, four teams will move on to the final eight of the women’s Hungarian Cup.

Eger, Keruleti, Szentes, and Szeged will meet the top four teams from last season: UVSE, Dunaujvaros, Ferencvaros, and BVSC in the next round, which is scheduled for November.

Eger and Szentes remained unbeaten in their respective groups, while Keruleti had enough quality to qualify ahead of Gyor in Group A. As there were only three teams in Group B, Szeged only needed to defeat Tatabanya to advance, which they did.

Gerda Brezovszki of Keruleti was in exceptional goal-scoring form over the weekend, scoring thirteen times. The former Dunaujvaros player netted five against both Eger and Gyor, and a hat-trick past MKUP.

For the reigning cup-holders, Eger, the first sighting of Rebecca Parkes and Dorottya Szilagyi this season didn’t come until Sunday. In their absence, Csenge Szellak, another smart signing in the summer for Eger, scored six against MKUP, as did Eger’s top goal scorer last season, Dora Czigany.

Szentes had a respectable performance in their matchups against their regional rivals, Szeged, and last season’s strugglers, Tatabanya. Szentes’s 15-year-old Rebeka Boldizsar was amongst those to impress, as was their Russian summer signing Dana Samsonova.
