ZV De Zaan stronger in the lead

February 7, 2022

ZV De Zaan won the top match against UZSC (Orange Pictures)

Not all matches took place in the Dutch League this weekend. For example, men’s leader AZC did not play because of too many corona infections. But women’s leader ZV De Zaan did play and won the top match against UZSC.

With the victory of ZV De Zaan over UZSC, the team from Zaandam strengthened its leading position. In the first period, De Zaan immediately set the tone by a 5-1 lead. The home team further expanded the lead in the third period (11-6). UZSC had a small final sprint, but the team from Utrecht did not come closer than 11-8. Polar Bears won against De Ham (18-11) and – due to the defeat of UZSC – rises to the second place.

PSV lost on Saturday against GZC Donk (12-15). The team from Eindhoven stayed on for a long time with the Gouda-team, but a weak third period (3-7) finally killed the team from Eindhoven. A day later, PSV was even closer to its first points. PSV led almost the entire match against De Ham, but in the last period De Ham still managed to win. Lizette Rozeboom scored the winning 9-8 one and a half minutes before the end.

Men

At the bottom, Waterpolo The Hague did good business by winning again for a long time. De Ham was defeated 11-7. After last week’s draw against SVH, the team from The Hague was now able to add three points and immediately climbed into the rankings. Koen Heiden and Jeroen Willemsen were the stars. They both scored three times.

Between UZSC and ZVL-1886 it was a tense match for three periods, but in the last period the home team still rolled over the Leiden team: 17-9. The same picture at ZV De Zaan against ZPC Amersfoort. The visitors were able to stay in the slipstream of De Zaan for three periods, but in the last period the home team made it clear that they were the better after all. Then De Zaan ran from 7-6 to 12-8 through Daan Bakker (3x) and Angelo Corver (2x).

GZC Donk won against PSV (12-19). The Eindhoven-squad did win the final period (5-4), but by then the visitors from Gouda had already built up a lead which was big enough to win.
