Two shootouts on Day 2 of Holiday Cup

Both matches of Day 2 at the 2019 Holiday Cup in Princeton offered a flood of goals and the winners were decided in penalty shootouts. Team USA defeated the Netherlands 23:22, and Italy won the match against Russia 18:16.

USA – Netherlands 23:22 (4:3, 6:7, 5:7, 3:1, PSO 5:4)

USA: Haralabidis 3 (+1 PSO), Williams 3, Musselman 2, Fattal 2, Steffens 2, Hauschild 2,J. Neushul 1, K. Neushul (2 PSO), Gilchirst (2 PSO).
Netherlands: Megens 5 (+2 PSO), Joustra 4, Rogge 4 (+1 PSO), Van der Sloot 3, Koolhaas 2, Sleeking (1 PSO)

The game was an even contest until 4:4. Then the Americans scored three unanswered goals and jumped to a 7:4 lead. Still, the Dutch came back quickly and leveled the score again (7:7), and they even went ahead 10:9 a minute before the end of the second period, but at halftime, the rivals were tied (10:10).

The USA led 14:12 in the middle of the third period. The European champions, pulled by Maud Megens, than produced a 5:1 run by the end of this quarter, and before the final eight minutes, they led 17:15. The hosts leveled at 17:17, while the Dutch gained a new advantage (18:17) three minutes from the end. Stephania Haralabidis netted her 3rd goal to equalize in the 31st minute, and the match went to the shootout.

After six rounds of the shootout, the score was 22:22. Then Gilchrist scored for 23:22, while Rogge missed, and the USA recorded the victory.

Italy – Russia 18:16 (3:3, 2:4, 5:3, 3:3, PSO 5:3)

Italy: Garibotti 3 (+1 PSO), Aiello 2, Bianconi 2 (+1 PSO), Tabani 1, Queirolo 1, Chiappini 1, Emmolo 1 (+1 PSO), Marletta 1 (+1 PSO), Carrega 1 (+1 PSO).
Russia: Prokofyeva 4 (+1 PSO), Soboleva 3, Serzhantova 2, Karimova 2, Simanovich 1 (+1 PSO), Ivanova 1, Gerzanich (1 PSO).

Russia was leading for most of the time, while Italy managed to level the score several times, but the Italians never had an advantage during the four quarters.

The rivals were tied before the last period (10:10). Russia earned 11:10 and 12:11 lead, but Italy leveled on both occasions. In the final minute, Soboleva put Russia in front once more – 13:12, but Italy’s Ailleo hit the back of the net just 10 seconds before the last buzzer for 13:13 and secured the penalty shootout. The Italians made no mistake in the series of the penalties, while Russia’s Borisova missed in the fourth round. After that, Marietta scored for the final score 18:16.
