Two teams have already earned quarterfinal berths at the European U17 Women’s Championships in Volos (Greece). After the second competition day, Spain and Greece secured top spots in their respective groups, which means that they are qualified for the quarterfinals.

The highlight of the Day 2 was a derby of Group B, between Italy and Hungary, which was ended with no winner.

Women’s European U17 Championships, Day 2

Group A

Greece – Serbia 17:11 (4:3, 5:3, 2:3, 6:2)

Greece: Ninou 3, Bovali 3, Bitsakou 3, Tricha 2, Kaiafa 2, Chelmi 1, Moustakaria 1.
SerbiaČ Avdic 3, Ilic 3, Ljujic 1, Sarac 1, Milicevic 1, Gasic 1, Miskovic 1.

Romania – France 8:12 (2:1, 3:5, 1:3, 2:3)

Romania: Sucigan 3, Bonca 2, Olteanu 2, Vidican 1.
France: Radosavljevic 3, Vernoux 2, Benlekbir 2, Bouloukbachi 1, Barriere 1, Heutraux 1, Khaddan 1, Dhalluin 1.

As expected, Greece defeated Serbia and secured the 1st place, but the favourites didn’t have an easy task today. The girls from Serbia played very well and didn’t let the Greeks build a big lead until the fourth quarter. The hosts were leading throughout the match. The Serbs managed to equalise a few times (3:3, 4:4, 9:9). Before the last period, Greece was two goals ahead (11:9). Early in the fourth quarter, the Serbians came close by scoring a goal for 10:11, but they ran out of gas for the last six minutes. Greece scored six goals and conceded just one in the remaining time, for a 16:11 victory.

France, which beat Romania today, and Serbia will battle tomorrow for the 2nd place in the group.

1 Greece 2 – 6
2 Serbia 2 – 3
3 France 2 – 3
4 Romania 2 – 0

Group B

Hungary – Italy 7:7 (1:1, 4:3, 1:1, 1:2)

Hungary: David 3, Szabo 1, Pocze 1, Ramocsai 1, Zantleitner 1.
Italy: Giustini 3, Klatowski 2, Spampinato 1, Bettini 1.

Czech Republic – Israel 5:19 (1:8, 1:4, 1:2, 2:5)

Czech Republic: Drnkova 3, Makovska 1, Hola 1.
Israel: Bogachenko 5, Yaacobi 2, Namakshtansky 2, Sasover 2, Regev 2, Sela 1, Menakerman 1, Lichtenstein 1.

The contenders for the 1st place in the group Hungary and Italy shared the points after a hard-fought battle. The Hungarians were leading for most of the time, but their advantage was never bigger than a goal. Before the last period, Hungary had a 6:5 lead. Italy opened the fourth quarter with two goals and went ahead for the 2nd time in the match – 7:6 (they had a 1:0 lead in the first quarter). Cila David netted her third goal to equalise (7:7) two and a half minutes before the end. In the remaining time, both teams had chances, but nobody found the net.

Probably, the goal difference will decide the group winner. After the 2nd round, Italy is better than the Hungarian team. The Italians will face Israel tomorrow, while Hungary will play with underdog Czech Republic, which was convincingly defeated by Italy and Israel.

1 Italy 2 – 4 (+21)
2 Hungary 2 – 4 (+8)
3 Israel 2 – 3
4 Czech Republic 2 – 0

Group C

Netherlands – Great Britain 24:1 (5:1, 7:0, 5:0, 7:0)

Netherlands: Hogervorst 5, Vermeulen 4, Kammerman 3, Plugge 2, Bijkerk 2, Bas 2, Pauli 2, Meijer 1, Ankone 1, Van de Velde 1, Vleeshakker 1.
Great Britain: Smith 1.

Germany – Bulgaria 16:4 (3:0, 3:1, 6:2, 4:1)

Germany:Vunder 4, Plotz 3, Krauss 3, Tadday 2, Kijlstra 1, Skibba 1, Rieck 1, Stuewe 1.
Bulgaria: Stefanova 1, Panovska 1, Rumenova 1, Zhelyazkova 1.

The Netherlands and Germany have collected 6 points each so far. Tomorrow, the encounter between these two sides will decide the group winner. The Dutch, which demolished Great Britain today (24:1) are favourites, but the Germans might surprise.

1 Netherlands 2 – 6
2 Germany 2 – 6
3 Great Britain 2 – 0
4 Bulgaria 2 – 0

Group D

Spain – Russia 15:8 (3:2, 5:2, 4:1, 3:3)

Spain: Ruiz 4, Camus 3, Palacio 2, Perez 2, Ungria 2, Marcos 1, Prieto 1.
Russia: Sharafutdinova 2, Panfilova 2, Lapteva 1, Evstifeeva 1, Bogdanova 1, Vorontsova 1.

Turkey – Slovakia 4:19 (0:3, 1:5, 1:7, 2:4)

Turkey: Uysal 2, Visha 1, Kece 1.
Slovakia: Junasova 4, Kolarova 4, Kissova 4, Halocka 2, Sedlakova 2, Garancovska 1, Mesterova 1, Kiernoszova 1.

Spain defeated Russia in the derby of Group D easier than it was expected. Spain controlled the match from the first whistle, but the Russians kept up with the Spaniards for almost two quarters. Midway through the second quarter, Spain had a 2-goal advantage (6:4). But then the Spaniards produced an 8:1 rush. They gained an unattainable 14:5 advantage in the middle of the last quarter.

1 Spain 2 – 6
2 Russia 2 – 3
3 Slovakia 2 – 3
4 Turkey 2 – 0
