Montenegrin Mirko Vicevic has been appointed Slovenia’s new head coach, the Federation of Slovenian Water Polo Clubs announced today.
Vicevic replaced Kristof Strosmajer, who left the position due to illness.
Slovenia will play at the European Championships in Croatia in January.
Vicevic, who was born in Kotor 55 years ago, won the Olympic gold medal (1991), two titles of world champion (1986 and 1991), and the title of European champion (1991) playing for Yugoslavia and Serbia and Montenegro.
He played for Primorac, Jadran Split, Barcelona, Pro Recco, Brescia and Savona.
Vicevic started his coaching career in his Kotor, where he guided Cattaro. He won gold at the European U17 championships, coaching the youth team of Montenegro. Early in 2022, he briefly coached Crvena Zvezda.
Since last year, Vicevic has been a member of the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
Slovenia was drawn into Group D of Division 2 of the European Championships, along with Slovakia, Netherlands and Romania.
