The composition of the groups at the World Championships in Doha (February 4 – 17) was finalized in the past two days.
The draw took place in November, but the qualification period ended with the conclusion of the European Championships in Croatia and the Netherlands.
Although the men’s continental championship is ongoing, the teams that will qualify for the Doha tournament were determined – Croatia, Montenegro, and Romania (the only three quarterfinalists that hadn’t qualified before the Europeans). Croatia, the finalist of the Europeans, takes the best position among these three teams, designated as “Europe 1” in the draw. Montenegro, which defeated Romania in the semifinals for the 5th-8th place classification yesterday, takes the spot of “Europe 2,” while Romania will be “Europe 3.”
Croatia’s opponents in the group stage at the World Championships will be Spain, its rival in tomorrow’s final in Zagreb, as well as Australia and South Africa. Montenegro finds itself in a group with Serbia, Japan, and the USA, and Romania will compete against Italy, Hungary, and Kazakhstan.
In the women’s tournament in Doha, Greece, the bronze medalist in Eindhoven, is “Europe 1”. France (6th place in Eindhoven) is “Europe 2”, and Great Britain (7th place at the European Championships) takes the position of “Europe 3”. Greece and France will be in the same group in Doha, along with Spain and China. Europe 3 (Great Britain) was drawn into the group with Italy, South Africa, and Canada.
