Brescia defeated Trieste by two goals (10:8) in the most anticipated match of the 19th round of the Italian League.
This victory keeps Brescia tied for first place with Pro Recco. Following the loss, Trieste now shares fourth place with Posillipo and Roma Vis Nova, all vying for the last spot in the playoff semifinals.
Trieste arrived in Brescia without its first-pick goalkeeper, Lazovic, and had only 12 players on the roster. Therefore, many believed Brescia wouldnβt have significant difficulties beating the rival. However, the game was open until the very end.
Brescia took an opening 2:0 lead. Trieste responded with three goals, but Brescia had a minimal advantage at the first break (4:3). In the early stage of the 2nd period, the hosts regained a 2-goal advantage β Max Irving converted a man-up for 5:3. Trieste chased Brescia and finally leveled in the middle of the third period after Draskovic converted a penalty shot (8:8). Bresciaβs Jacopo Alesiani closed the quarter with a power-play goal (9:8). The fourth period was fiercely contested, and the decisive moment came just 45 seconds before the end when Max Irving scored during a 6-on-5 attack securing a 10:8 victory for Brescia. Irving finished as Bresciaβs top scorer with three goals, while Triesteβs Vuk Draskovic scored four.
Pro Recco bagged three points in Sicily with a commanding 14:6 victory over Ortigia. Francesco Condemi, who joined Recco from Ortigia two years ago, led the championsβ offense by scoring four goals against his former team.
Roma Vis Nova defeated its local rival, Olympic Roma, by 13:11. Roma Vis Nova was a heavy favorite and led throughout the match, but Olympic was always close. Viskovic and Antonucci led Roma Vis Nova with three goals. De Robertis scored four, and Vidovic three for Olympic.
Posillipo trashed Onda Forte β 17:7 with four goals from Radulovic and Mattiello.
De Akker kept its chances of climbing to fourth place with an 18:12 victory over Catania. The Bologna-based team has three points less than the three that share fourthβsixth place.
Savona earned a convincing 17:9 away win over Florentia and itβs almost certain that it will enter the playoffs from 3rd place. Ten Savona players scored, and Bruni and Guidi each netted three goals.
