Brescia narrowly defeated Savona 6:5 in an exciting derby in the 25th round of the Italian League and secured 2nd place position ahead of the playoffs. Brescia still has a chance to claim the top spot in the regular season – it will take first place if it beats Pro Recco in the 26th round in two weeks.
Pro Recco maintained its winning streak by defeating Onda Forte 16:9.
Following today’s derby, it is sure that Savona will finish in 3rd place, while the competition for 4th place remains undecided. Trieste and De Akker are still racing neck-and-neck.
Only three goals were scored in the first half of the derby between Savona and Brescia. After the first eight minutes, the result was 1:1. In the middle of the second period, Irving gave Brescia a 2:1 lead. The visitors missed two penalties in the first half. Still, they didn’t pay for it. Pietro Figlioli opened the second half with an action goal to level at 2:2. Guerrato replied, but Figlioli added one more goal before the last break. Hence, the teams entered the final period tied at 3:3. The hard defensive battle continued in the fourth quarter. Brescia’s Alesiani scored the first goal in the final period only in the 29th minute, but Figlioli leveled at 4:4 immediately. Two and a half minutes before the end, Ferrero converted a man-up, and Brescia went to 5:4. Vincenzo Dolce decided everything by scoring for 6:4 with 26 seconds left on the clock. In the dying seconds, Savona’s Erdely closed the match with a consolation goal. Veteran Figlioli was the top scorer, with three goals. Guerratto scored two for Brescia.
After the encounter between Pro Recco and Onda Forte, the home club organized a farewell ceremony for three players who will leave the club after the end of the season – Marco Del Lungo, Aaron Younger and Ben Hallock. The latter didn’t play today. Besides Hallock, Francesco Di Fulvio missed the match. Without the two, the Italian champion struggled in a 4:4 first quarter. However, the favorite took control after the first break and recorded a 16:9 win. Younger, Iocchi Gratta and Condemi scored three goals each for Recco. Onda Forte’s Faraglia found the net four times.
Trieste beat Ortigia 15:10 at home despite a slow start. The Sicilians had a 2-goal advantage at the first break (4:2). Trieste leveled at 4:4 and 6:6. Still, Ortigia entered the second half with a 7:6 advantage. Shortly after the middle break, Trieste took an 8:7 lead. Until the end, the hosts stretched the margin to five. Draskovic scored four goals, and Manzi added three to help Trieste win.
Trieste and De Akker are tied in points, but Trieste is in 4th place because of a better head-to-head score.
Today, De Akker earned an away 12:9 win over Olympic Roma. The visitors made a crucial difference between the 9th and 24th minutes. De Akker scored seven, conceding four goals in the middle two periods. Stefano Luongo was De Akker’s leader again, finding the net five times.
Roma Vis Nova and Posillipo no longer have a chance of reaching 4th place and the semifinals of the playoffs.
Roma Vis Nova suffered a 5:8 loss to Iren Quinto in Genova.
Posillipo won a point in a home game against Telimar. The visitors from Sicily opened the match with a 4:0 run and were in front for most of the game. Two minutes before the end, Telimar led 12:10. The hosts secured a point, scoring the last two goals.
