Following the announcement that Boris Vapenski and Nikola Murisic have been allowed to represent Serbia, a new piece of information has emerged about sports nationality changes.
World Aquatics has approved the Water Polo Federation of Montenegro’s request, allowing Russian player Dmitrii Kholod to compete for Montenegro.
That decision was expected since, according to updated regulations, a waiting period between representing an athlete’s former and his new country has been shortened to one year (between 2023 and 2025, World Aquatics’ regulations required a three-year break).
Dmitri Kholod,33, has not played for Russia since the 2021 Olympic Qualification Tournament. He has been living in Montenegro since 2023, when he joined Jadran Herceg Novi. All the requirements have been met.
Kholod, who has been one of Jadran Herceg Novi’s best players over the last two seasons, is now officially a candidate for Montenegro’s roster at the World Championships. He has been with the national team since the start of this summer’s preparations.
