After a not-so-successful 2024 year, Hungary is eager to return to the road of medals with a pretty new team.
Zsolt Varga, the head coach, announced the roster for the 2025 World Championships in Singapore today.
The 2023 World Champions did not win a medal in 2024. The Hungarians finished in 4th place at the European Championships in Zagreb, competing with a refreshed lineup. They ended up 7th at the World Championships in Doha and lost the bronze medal match at the Olympic Games to Team USA. This season, however, Hungary secured a bronze medal in the World Cup with a rejuvenated team.
This season, however, Hungary secured a bronze medal in the World Cup with their rejuvenated team. They are set to travel to Singapore with a significantly different squad than the one that finished 4th in Paris.
Five Olympians are missing: Denes Varga (retired), Gergo Zalanki (takes a break in the national team’s competitions this year), Balazs Harai, and both goalkeepers: Soma Vogel and Viktor Banyai.
Harai and Banyai weren’t on the extended roster this summer, but it’s surprising that Ferencvaros’ goalkeeper, Soma Vogel, isn’t among the 15 selected players. Vogel is out due to an injury and surgery. Initially, the surgery was scheduled to take place in the autumn. Obviously, the surgery has to be done earlier than planned.
The new goalkeepers for the team are Kristof Csoma and Marton Miszei, both of whom participated in all three matches of the recently concluded BENU Cup in Budapest. In addition to them, there are several new players compared to those who participated in the Paris Olympics. Gergely Burian, a left-handed player from Barceloneta, will replace Zalanki. Three players from Ferencvaros have also joined the team: Vendel Vigvari, Zsombor Vismeg, and Akos Nagy. Additionally, Peter Kovacs from BVSC is part of the lineup. (At the Olympic Games, the teams were limited to 13 players – two fewer than the roster size at the World Championships)
