The 2025 menβs European Super Cup, which features European champion Ferencvaros and Euro Cup winner Pro Recco, will take place in Budapest on October 8,Β as decided by European Aquatics.
Pro Recco is the record-holder of the Super Cup (inaugurated in 1976) with nine trophies in its treasury (2003, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2015, 2021, 2022,2023). This year, the Italian giant qualified for the Super Cup as the Euro Cup winner for the first time.
Ferencvaros holds 2nd place in the list of all-time Super Cup winners with five titles. The Hungarian powerhouse lifted its first two trophies in 1978 and 1980, both times as the Cup Winners’ Cup champion. Ferencvaros has become the first, and so far, the only Euro Cup/LEN Trophy winner to clinch the Super Cup. That happened in 2018, when it beat Olympiacos, the European champion that year, after a penalty shootout in Budapest. Next year, the Hungarians won their first Champions League and defended the Super Cup. In 2024, they ended Pro Recco’s three-year dominance in the Champions League and Super Cup. After defeating Pro Recco in the Champions League final in Malta (12:11), Ferencvaros beat Jug in the Super Cup match in Budapest (13:9).
Each team has only suffered one defeat in the Super Cup finals. In 1984, Pro Recco became the European champion for the second time in its history, but lost to POSK Split in the Super Cup. Ferencvaros won its first Euro Cup in 2017. Several months later, it was defeated by Champions League winner Szolnok in the Super Cup.
Overture in New York
The 2025 Super Cup won’t be the first encounter between the two giants in the next season. On September 4, they will face off in a promotional match in New York. That game is part of their American tour. The day before, Ferencvaros will play against the team of the UCLA University, while Recco will meet Princeton.
