Four Italian clubs that had a successful start in the European cups this week continued winning in Serie A1.
After victories in the first rounds of the Champions League and the Euro Cup, Pro Recco, Brescia, Savona, and Trieste claimed new wins in the national championships.
Savona had the most challenging task. Two days after the Euro Cup match against Spandau in Berlin, Savona faced Ortigia in Sicily.
The games in Berlin and Syracuse had very similar storylines. In Berlin, Spandau took a 4:0 lead. Savona came back, earned the lead in the 3rd period, and eventually won 16:15. The match in Syracuse started even worse for Savona, as Ortigia jumped to 5:0 in the first quarter. Savona got on the scoreboard only in the eighth minute. At halftime, the Sicilians had an 8:6 lead. They widened the gap to three goals early in the third quarter – 9:6. Then, Savona’s big comeback started. The visitors produced a 6:0 run, earned a 12:9 lead, which opened the visitors’ road to a 14:12 victory. Young Hungarian Oliver Leinweber netted five goals for Savona, while veteran Pietro Figlioli added four.
Max Irving netted six goals to help Pro Recco beat De Akker 22:12. Trieste was also very convincing. It defeated Canottieri Napoli 22:12, and Manzi, Mezzarobba, and Cagalj scored four goals each. Brescia recorded the biggest win of the day, defeating Telimar 18:7. Guerrato and Alesiani both contributed four goals to the win.
Salerno was better than Posillipo in the derby of the south, 13:11. Privitera scored five goals for Salerno, while Danilo Radovic netted four for the Naples-based team.
