Aleksandar Sapic, the Mayor of Belgrade, will assume the role of the head coach of Novi Beograd starting this Sunday, at the Premier League match against Primorac in Kotor, as reported by the Serbian website “Sport klub.”
While the club has not officially confirmed this news, unofficial sources indicate that Sapic will take over from Petar Radanovic, who was appointed head coach several months ago. Radanovic, will continue to be a part of the coaching staff as Sapic’s assistant.
Sapic won 20 medals and scored 981 goals in 385 games playing for the national teams of Yugoslavia, Serbia and Montenegro, and Serbia. He was one of the founders of Novi Beograd and has already guided the team as head coach several years ago, when the club competed in lower leagues. In 2019, Vladimir Vujasinovic took the helm of the coaching staff, and Sapic served as his assistant for a while. After Vujasinovic’s departure, Dejan Jovovic, Igor Milanovic, Zivko Gocic, and Petar Radanovic have guided the team that won three silver medals in the Champions League in the past four seasons.
Sport Klub reports that Sapic has attended numerous training sessions this season, actively participating and offering advice.
Until the end of 2025, Novi Beograd will play games in three competitions. After the match against Primorac, it will compete in the Serbian Cup Final Four next week, where it will face Radnicki in the semifinals. In ten days, Novi Beograd will host Jadran Split in the Champions League 5th round.
Sapic has served as the mayor of Belgrade for more than three years and was re-elected in June 2024.
