Pro Recco defeated Savona 11:7 in the big match of the ninth round of the Italian League.
Both Recco and Savona achieved their initial goals on the European stage this week. Recco secured a spot in the Champions League Quarterfinals, while Savona qualified for the eighth-finals of the Euro Cup. They entered the match in a good mood, but maybe a little bit tired.
The first half of the derby was a defensive battle, highlighted by outstanding performances from both goalkeepers, Nicosia and Del Lungo. Pro Recco earned a 2:0 lead in the first 03:07 minutes. However, the title-holder didn’t add a single goal until the middle break. Savona managed to level, and the teams were tied at 2:2 before the third quarter. Pro Recco opened the second half furiously. Francesco Di Fulvio and Alvaro Granados scored two goals each in less than two minutes to push Pro Recco to 6:2. That 4:0 run determined the rest of the match. Recco had an 11:5 lead in the fourth period, and Savona scored two consolation goals at the finish. Di Fulvio scored four goals for Pro Recco, and Granados added two. Pietro Figlioli netted two for Savona.
The reigning champion has won 27 points in nine matches. Alongside Pro Recco, Brescia maintains a perfect record.
Brescia defeated Olympic Roma 13:8 at home with four goals from Mario Del Basso. Brescia dominated in an 8:1 first half. The hosts increased their lead to 10:1 early in the third period. They slowed down in the rest of the match, allowing Olympic to reduce the gap to five goals.
De Akker climbed to the upper half of the standing. The Bolognese moved to 7th place thanks to a 15:12 away victory over Telimar. They secured the victory thanks to a stunning finish. The Sicilians had a 12:1 advantage in the 26th minute, but De Akker scored the last four goals in the match and took all three points.
Posillipo’s defense was up to the task in a 10:5 win over Iren Quinto.
Trieste beat Ortigia by five goals in a 35-goal match. Trieste trailed 7:8 at halftime, but imposed its rhythm in the second half and recorded a 20:15 win.
