Next weekend, the Barcelona International Water Polo Academy (BIWPA) will organize the 3rd Beach Water Polo Costa Brava tournament in Palamos (Spain).
Twenty teams will take part, while an All-Star game will be played on Saturday evening. The biggest star of that match will be Felipe Perrone, the winner of the Total Player 2018 award.
BIWPA organizes the tournament with the support of the City Council of Palamos. The event will be held from August 30th to September 1st on the Catalan Costa Brava and will host a total of 20 teams from 7 European countries. The tournament welcomes several combined Catalan teams such as CN Barcelona, CN Catalunya, UE Horta, teams from the rest of Spain: CD Fortuna, Urbat IKE from the Basque Country… and a total of 11 foreign teams, with a significant presence of five French teams.
The event has already become a classic to close the summer season in Palamos.
As every year, on the second day of the competition (August 31), the All-Star Game will be played, featuring one player from each team and Felipe Perrone, one of the best players on the planet and the silver medalist at the last World Championships. The match starts at 7 PM.
This year, the tournament in Palamos is held just after the beach water polo competition has been a part of the FINA World Championships for the first time in history.
A more dynamic water polo
The beach water polo is a variant of the water polo that offers more dynamic spectacle in a smaller field with fewer players (5 instead of 7). It is an ideal format to promote the sport in smaller fields of play and focusing on fun with pre- and after-match entertainment.
As it was in the previous editions, there will be two inflatable fields of play on the beach in Palamos, the competition area right in front and a village area with music and the bar service for the public.
