Ferencvaros has retained the Men’s LEN Super Cup. The Hungarians, the current European champions, defeated Marseille, the 2019 LEN Euro Cup winner, in the Super Cup match played in Marseille this evening – 14:11.
Last year, Ferencvaros clinched the 2018 Super Cup, by beating Olympiacos after a penalty shootout (11:9).

Today’s Super Cup was the second encounter between Ferencvaros and Marseille in a span of two weeks. On 19 October, Ferencvaros easily defeated Marseille in Budapest in the Champions League Group B 13:7, after leading 7:1 at halftime.
The match in Marseille offered a completely different storyline.
Marseille was leading for most of the time. Ferencvaros secured a win in the last few minutes.
After the balanced first period (2:2), Marseille dominated the second quarter and entered the second half with a huge 4-goal advantage (8:4).
But, Ferencvaros was able to come back. The Hungarians opened the third quarter with three goals and cut the deficit by the middle of the quarter (7:8). Djurdjic doubled the hosts’ advantage (9:7), but Younger scored from an extra six seconds before the last break, so Ferencvaros trailed by a goal after the third quarter (8:9).
Denes Varga found the net to equalise in Ferencvaros’s first possession in the fourth period (9:9). But, Kovacevic responded immediately and put Marseille ahead (10:9).
Then came crucial moments. Ferencvaros took control, the Hungarians tightened their defence. On the other side of the pool, the European champion, led by Ioannis Fountoulis, netted four straight goals for a nice 13:10 lead with 02 minutes and 21 seconds to go. Marseille scored its 11th goal 33 seconds from the end (11:13), but it was too late.
Ioannis Fountoulis, the hero of the match, beat the buzzer. Two seconds before the end, the Greek scored his 5th goal this evening for the final score 14:11.
Ferencvaros won the 2019 Super Cup, and added their fifth trophy in the European competitions since 2017. Ferencvaros clinched the Euro Cup in 2017 and 2018 and the Super Cup in 2018. This year in May, they won the Champions League in Hannover.
Ferencvaros has lost just one European final in the last two years. In 2017, they lost Super Cup final in a penalty shootout to Szolnok.
This was Ferencvaros’s fourth winning trophy in Super Cup, after wins in 1978, 1980 and 2018.

From 1976 to 2002, the LEN Super Cup was an encounter between the winners of the Champions Cup /Champions League and a winner of the Cup Winners’ Cup. Since the discontinuation of the Cup Winners’ Cup, a European Champion and a winner of the Euro Cup (earlier the LEN Trophy) have been playing in the Super Cup.
