The Italian Swimming Federation (FIN) prolonged the suspension of its competitions, but FIN prepares for the next phase of the battle against the coronavirus pandemic.
FIN announced that it had extended the suspension of the competitions until May 31 and that it had appointed a commission of health specialists and the representatives of the Federation, which will determine the methods for restarting the activities and reopening the pools. This is now called “phase 2” of the coronavirus emergency. (A few days ago, the Italian government created a task force of experts to navigate Italy’s exit from the COVID-19 crisis as part of the so-called “phase two” which could begin early in May)
As for water polo, FIN announced:
“The Federal council has confirmed the suspension of the Final Four of the Italian Cup for men and the national water polo championships for men (leagues A1, A2, league B, junior competitions) and women (leagues A1 and A2) pending further insights and forthcoming assessments by the authorities regarding the reopening of phase 2”.
In its statement, FIN explained the duties of the new commission. The commission will draw up a summary that provides help and support to government authorities, and which represents a valid model to be adopted to resume motor activity from the base and competitions in full security for all involved in the aquatic disciplines (athletes, exercisers…)
“The intention is to provide authoritative considerations to promptly encourage the correct initiatives to be taken to open Italian swimming pools as soon as possible in phases 2 and subsequent.
Aware of a compound path, which will most likely require further sacrifices in a period of profound crisis and it will only be possible to develop heterogeneously on the territory of the country, Federnuoto (FIN) believes that the guidelines defined by the commission will also be very useful for creating a dialogue between regional committees and local health institutions to support preventive operational planning in favor of the citizens.”
Italy is, still, hardly hit by the coronavirus pandemic. However, the daily numbers of new cases and deaths have decreased in the last few days, while the number of recovered people increases. There are more than 170.000 registered coronavirus cases in Italy, with more than 22.000 deaths. Over 42.000 infected persons have recovered from the illness.
