OSC Budapest lost its main sponsor recently, but it seems that the current leader of the Hungarian Championships won’t be out of the circle of the favorites for the trophies in the following competitions.
So far, Andrija Prlainovic and head coach Lajos Vad left the club, but OSC started to rebuild a team and a staff.
Former Olympic champion with Hungary Daniel Varga will become OSC’s head coach. He will replace Lajos Vad, who will coach Vasas in the next two seasons.
Daniel Varga will start to work with OSC’s players as soon as the team starts to train again. In a few weeks, the Hungarian Water Polo Federation will decide if the league can be continued during the summer
Older brother Varga played water polo in Ujpest Dosza, Vasas, Primorje, Szolnok, while he finished the career in Ferencvaros in 2018. After retirement, he started to work as a coach of the youth team of Ferencvaros Most of his playing career, Daniel’s teammate was his brother Denes, the winner of the 2019 Total Player Award. Denes Varga is the main star of the Hungarian national team and Ferencvaros.
Two years ago, in an interview after retirement, Varga discovered that he had always wanted to be a coach:
-Since I remember, I was sure I wanted to be a coach one day, and I’ve been wanting it for decades now. Finally, I have the -opportunity to do so. Of course, this doesn’t justify my leaving plaing career at the age of 35, but many things occurred. On one hand, my water polo career has become a stretched bow that makes me feel it’s not worth “pulling” further. There are certain things that are still fun, but overall I do not have the feeling I used to have before.
Playing for Hungary, Daniel Varga won the Olympic title in 2008, the gold medal at the 2013 World Championships, two silver medals at the World Championships (2005, 2007), two European silvers (2006, 2014)… He won three trophies in the European competitions for clubs – two LEN Euro Cups with Ferencvaros (2017 and 2018) and the Cup Winners’ Cup with Vasas (2002). He led Hungary as a captain to the gold medal at the 2013 World Championships. Daniel Varga was also Ferencvaros’s captain in his last playing season. Asked if they were any memories he’s glad to remember Varga said:
I won four championships after the club has been waiting for the title for a long time. When we first won it, I played in Vasas, and it’s been 18 years without a title (1989-2007). Later, in Rijeka, we ended a sixty-six-years-long waiting by becoming champions. For Ferencváros, it’s been 18 years until we got our hands on the gold medal. These results are important to be. The first memory is always special, and so I remember it whenever I think of my career – Varga said. According to the latest information, foreign players will leave OSC. Andrija Prlainovic already moved to Marseille. Besides Prlainovic, Serbs Branislav Mitrovic, Sava Randjelovic, Nemanja Ubovic, Montenegrins Drasko Brguljan, and Aleksa Ukropina and Slovak Lukas Seman have played for OSC this season. They probably won’t stay in the club. Still, it’s most likely that three current European champions with Hungary Krisztian Manhercz, Balasz Harai and Balazs Eredlyi will continue to play for OSC.
