The 19th FINA World Championships in Fukuoka (Japan) will be held in 2022.
Today, FINA announced that it had decided to reschedule the World Championships. The competition, that was initially scheduled for the summer of 2021 (July 16 – August 1), will take place from May 13 to May 29, 2022.
“After liaising with the relevant stakeholders and receiving feedback from them, we have no doubt that the decision taken will provide the best possible conditions for all participants at the Championships. We look forward to witnessing the world’s best aquatic athletes from around the world competing in the city of Fukuoka (JPN) in 2022,” said FINA President Dr Julio C. Maglione. “At a time of unprecedented uncertainty, FINA hopes the announcement of these dates will allow for some clarity in planning for all concerned, FINA announced today.
To remind, the postponement is caused by the rescheduling of the Olympic Games from 2020 to 2021.
The World Championships couldn’t be staged before the Olympic Games. The Olympic Games in Tokyo are a part of the qualifications for the water polo tournament at the Fukuoka Championships. Four male and four female teams will earn their tickets for Fukuoka in Tokyo.
The FINA World Masters Championships will take place across the island of Kyushu (JPN), from May 31-June 9, 2022.
FINA still hasn’t announced the new dates of the Olympic Water Polo Qualification tournaments in Rotterdam (men) and Trieste (women).
