The semifinal matches of the Hungarian Cup, scheduled for this evening, are postponed because four players of Ferencvaros were tested positive for COVID-19.
The final tournament started on Margaret Island in Budapest this morning with the matches for the places 5th – 16th.
But, in the early afternoon, the presidency of the Hungarian Water Polo Federation (MVLSZ) held an extraordinary meeting and decided to postpone all of the following games.
MVLSZ’s statement:
“Ferencvaros officially informed the Hungarian Water Polo Association that four players were tested positive for Covid-19 during the coronavirus testing, done on Wednesday morning, before the BENU Hungarian Cup.
Considering the significance of the news, we made the painful, but in our opinion, the only right decision to postpone the further conduct of the BENU Men’s Hungarian Cup matches.
Purchased tickets are scheduled to be redeemable for a later event and redeemed upon request.
We will provide more information as soon as possible.
Hungarian Water Polo Association”
Ferencvaros also published a statement and said more-less the same as the Water Polo Federation. The players feel well and they have no symptoms, Ferencvaros announced.
Many of the players were disappointed after the postponement
Filip Filipovic, Szolnok’s and Serbia’s goal-getter said:
“I wish Ferencvaros players to recover as soon as possible. I am very disappointed with the decision to postpone the tournament due to the negligence of the players of one club, who were at the party. Other clubs are also outraged by the decision of the Federation because we came in the clubs two months ago because of the Hungarian Cup and were preparing for the tournament…” (source Filip Filipovic’s official website)

Ferencvaros was supposed to play against Vasas in the semifinals, and the other semifinal pair is OSC – Szolnok.
