As day four of the Women’s World Junior Championships comes to a close, we have our eight quarter-finalists. The two really tasty-looking matches, which will be played tomorrow, are between the Netherlands and Hungary, and Spain vs Russia.
The hosts, Israel, will perhaps meet their match against Italy, while the free-scoring Greek side will be overwhelming favourites when they face Serbia.
Today’s Results
Italy 19-4 France (4-1, 4-0, 4-2, 7-1) – Round of 16
Italy will face Israel in the quarter finals after outclassing France in the first Round of 16 fixture of the day. Sofia Giustini converted four times in the match, while Dafne Bettini’s two goals takes her to the top of goal scoring charts with her total tally up to 16 for the tournament.
Camelia Bouloukbachi’s hat-trick in the match for France was their only highlight, as they will face Brazil tomorrow in the 9th-12th semi-final.
Germany 2-18 Spain (0-5, 1-4, 0-4, 1-5) – Round of 16
Spain were professional in dispatching Germany in their Round of 16 clash. Elena Ruiz netted four times for the Spanish, with Lucia Gomez contributing three scores. There were also braces for A. Ruiz, Prats Rodriguez, Camarena, Camus and Palacio in the match, which will give their side confidence going into a box office quarter-final against Russia tomorrow.
Serbia 11-7 Brazil (4-0, 0-1, 4-2, 3-4) – Round of 16
Serbia held out against a last-quarter Brazilian resurgence to book a place in the quarter final against Greece. The Serbs started the game quickly, taking a 4-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to two goals from Hristina Ilic, and only conceded a single goal in the second period from Leticia Belorio. Two more goals from Ilic in the third period kept the Serbs ticking over, and with four minutes with the score at 10-3, the four unanswered goals that Brazil did put away were too little, too late.
Argentina 2-19 Hungary (0-7, 0-3, 2-2, 0-7) – Round of 16
A blistering start and finish to the game from Hungary, winning 0-7 in both periods, saw Tamas Varga’s side comfortably through to the quarter finals. UVSE’s Panni Szegedi netted four times, while one the other Panna’s in the side, Kudella, secured a hat-trick. The Hungarians will not have time to celebrate as they face a tough Dutch outfit tomorrow in the quarter finals.
Slovakia 10-13 South Africa (4-4, 1-1, 2-3, 3-5) – 13th-16th Play Off
Two hat-tricks from South African captain and Olympian, Jordan Wedderburn, and Anna Thorton-Dibb, gave Delaine Mentoor and her side the first win of their competition. In what was an extremely tight game, it was only until the third quarter when the African’s scored three goals on the bounce (Wedderburn, Miszweski and Harty) that the side from the Southern Hemisphere pulled away from their opponents.
Peru 3-11 Uzbekistan (1-3, 1-1, 1-3, 0-4) – 13th-16th Play Off
After a close defeat to Brazil yesterday, Uzbekistan had much more joy against a side from South America today, as they saw off Peru. Madinabonu Shermatova, the Uzbek captain, led the way for the Asians with four goals, while four goals shared equally between Anastasiya Berezina and Kristina Logutova sealed the deal for their side.
