After a successful first round of fixtures in Becej in September, the Danube League returns this weekend to the South-East of Hungary and to the town of Szentes. The League, which was created in 2018, was designed to fill the void of a regional women’s competition in Europe, and is doing a good job in giving some of Europe’s most exciting up and coming teams an opportunity at playing in a continental competition.
The hosts, Szentes, are a hugely historic club – with the women’s team winning the Hungarian National Championship on Seven occasions (as recently as 2014), and won the LEN Euro League in 1993. Nowadays, Szentes is more modest in its aspirations, but there is no doubt it is a fantastic club that consistently produces top players. The Women’s team sit 5th in the OB I, and have a Hungarian Cup semi-final to look forward to next week.
Round 2 Preview:
Szentes sit top of the table with five wins from their opening five games. Red Star Belgrade are second on 10pts, but have played a game less than Szentes and would go only two points behind Szentes if they win their opening game of the weekend against fellow-Serbians, Vojvodina.
WPA Bucharesti and ZAVK Mladost are both on 9pts, but the Croatians have a game in hand. If they can defeat their Croatian counterparts, Jadran Split in the first game of the weekend, they will go third.
Olympia Kosice, who participated in the Euro League qualifiers last month, are not attending this weekend, but the Universiade Team of Great Britain return and will be looking for their first win of the competition as they face Tas2000 on Saturday morning.
