A legendary Serbian player and coach, Igor Milanovic, will become Novi Beograd’s head coach soon.
In January, Vladimir Vujasinovic resigned as Novi Beograd’s coach. He was replaced by Dejan Jovovic. But, Novi Beograd continued to have ups and downs in the games. After a defeat to Crvena Zvezda in the Serbian League on Saturday, the club’s management will change the coach again. Anyway, Jovovic’s engagement, who has worked with junior and youth teams of Novi Beograd, was a temporary solution, until an appointment of a new coach for a longer period.
Igor Milanovic will take over the team in several days, Serbian daily Sportski Zurnal has written. Novi Beograd hasn’t confirmed the information. However, reliable sources told us that Jovovic would guide Novi Beograd in the match against Brescia tomorrow. After that, the confirmation of Milanovic’s arrival is expected.
Many consider Milanovic the best player in the world in the 20th century. He won two Olympic golds (1984, 1988), two Champions League as a player (with Mladost and with Catalunya), etc.
In the first decade of the 21st century, he started his coaching career as a head coach of Banjica (Partizan “B” team). He guided two clubs to the titles in the Champions League – Partizan (2011) and Pro Recco (2015). Besides these two giants, he coached Galatasaray, Valis Valjevo and Crvena Zvezda.
Skoumpakis joins Vlachopoulos
Novi Beograd has started composing the team for the next season. It’s most likely that Dimitrios Skoumpakis, a member of the Greek national team, will move to Novi Beograd and join his fellow countryman Angelos Vlachpoulos. Skoumpakis, the winner of the silver medal in Tokyo, played for Olympiacos for years. Last summer, he left Olympiacos and signed a contract with Vouliagmeni. After a season in the second-best Greek club, he will continue his career in Serbia. The negotiations between the player and the Serbian club have been almost finished.
