Last week, a traditional “Tomo Udovicic” tournament for youth categories was held in Dubrovnik. The tournament, organized by Jug Dubrovnik, is considered one of the best competitions for the youngest water polo players in the world.
The 10th edition of the tournament, which was founded in honor of Jug’s coach Tomo Udovicic, was held this year, with a record number of participants. A total of 850 young players from 12 countries and 52 clubs battled for medals and enjoyed water polo in the “Gruz “pool between Tuesday and Sunday (April 19 – 24).
The tournament was organized in three age categories – the U12 (boys), the U14 (boys), and for the first time, the U15 (girls).
The teams from Spain, France, Monaco, Germany, Hungary, Greece, Romania, Serbia, Montenegro, Ireland, Italy and Croatia took part in the six-day water polo festival in Dubrovnik. Almost 160 games were played in two fields of the pool in Dubrovnik.
The young players from Serbia rejoiced the most. The boys who are the future of Water Polo Club Sabac celebrated two titles. Sabac won the gold medal in the U12 tournament, while Sava (Sabac “B”) was the best in the competitions for the 14-year-old boys and younger. Catalunya (Spain) is the first-ever winner of the U15 tournament for girls.
Sabac had two very close games in the quarters (Jadran HN) and semis (Budva), but they were very convincing against Jadran Split in the U12 final (10:3). Sava was better than Medvescak Zagreb in the gold-medal match of the U14 tournament, but was also very dominant throughout the whole tournament. Catalunya beat host Jug Dubrovnik in the final for young ladies. This game was the most exciting medal match. Catalunya prevailed after a penalty shootout.
