A day before the end of the group stage at the 19th Mediterranean Games in Oran (Algeria), Spain and Serbia secured top spots in their respective groups.
To remind, the U18 teams participate in the water polo tournament in Oran.
Spain, which edged out Greece on Day 1 (12:11) in Group A, recorded a comfortable victory in another derby – over Italy (14:8) and secured 1st place.
The Greeks and the Italians will face off tomorrow in the duel that will decide who will join Spain in the semifinals. The Spaniards will meet Turkey, which is locked for 4th place.
The big match of Group B was played today. Serbia and Montenegro clashed. Both teams recorded convincing wins in the previous rounds. Montenegro opened the derby well and led 6:3 in the middle of the third quarter. Then Serbia made a comeback. It held neighbors scoreless for almost 12 minutes while it produced a 5:0 run to jump to an 8:6 lead. Serbia recorded a 9:8 victory.
Despite the loss, Montenegro will probably qualify for the semifinals, along with Serbia. On the last day, Montenegro will play against Slovenia, which beat France today (11:7). The Montenegrins need a point in that game to keep 2nd place. Serbia will face the last-placed Portugal.
