On the third day of competition at the U16 Women’s World Championships in Larissa, the debuting ‘second’ preliminary round is taking shape. At this point, Hungary and Spain have mathematically earned their spots in the Quarter-final, and the Netherlands are in an excellent position to join them.
Hungary swept their Group E games today with two wins from two. A clean sheet in the first half for the Hungarians helped them defeat Australia 9-2, while four goals apiece for Kata Hajdu (who also bagged a quad against the Stingers) and Eszter Varro was enough to see off the United States (10-8).
Three of the teams in Group F are tied on points. South Africa were beaten by Greece and Turkiye, but Japan Prevailed over the Turks leaving the two quarter-final berths in this intriguing group open-ended
As the second preliminary round of the tournament gets into full swing in Group G, Spain remain unbeaten after another two games today; beating Israel 10-7, but settling for a 6-6 draw against Croatia this evening. Three goals from the very talented Croatian Ria Glas, who regularly plays several age groups up, was crucial in securing a well-earned point against one of the world’s top nations.
While just one match was played in Group H, it was a high scoring affair thanks to the Netherlands’ 24-0 demolition of Switzerland. Amongst a number of big goal hauls for the Dutch featured six goals each for Pien Gorter and Amy Kleinlugtbeld.
Today was a day off for Italy, just as it had been for Japan and Switzerland in the previous two matchdays.
