With the four goals that she netted against Germany, Ekaterina Prokofyeva (captain of the Russian team), is the top scorer of the Championships so far with 14 goals to her name. Russia is the highest scoring team in the women’s category so far, averaging 30 goals per game, and having scored a grand total of 89 goals in just three matches.
Russia’s first three matches were against the easiest opponents, but up next they have to play Hungary and Spain, the toughest matchups that they will face in the group stage.
Prokofyeva, who is ahead of her teammates Elvina Karimova and Anastasia Simanovich by one goal in the scoring charts, can aim to end the reign of Rita Keszthelyi, top scorer in the last three editions of the European Championships.
The Hungary captain took the top scorer crown home in both Eindhoven 2012 and Budapest 2014 after scoring 19 times, while also topping the charts in Belgrade 2016, with 23 goals. Prokofyeva is only nine goals away from breaking Keszthelyi´s record in a single edition and she still has five games remaining; two in the group stage, the quarterfinals, and potentially the semifinal and final matches.
In Hungary’s match against Serbia, Keszthelyi starred once again as she beat the goalkeeper seven times in an easy win that ended with a 23-6 score. She now has 13 goals in the first three matches of Barcelona 2018. The all-time record for most goals in a single edition of the women’s competition belongs to Alice Lindhout with 31 goals back in Leeds 1991.
