Theodoros Lorantos has been appointed as the new head coach of France’s women’s national team.
The 51-year-old succeeds Emilien Bugeaud, who stepped down from his position with the national team in November.
Lorantos will begin in his new post in March.
Lorantos’ primary task is to guide the French women’s national team to their Olympic debut on home soil in 2024. More immediately though, his attention for 2023 will be on the upcoming World Cup in Rotterdam, the World Championships in Fukuoka, and the European Championships in Tel Aviv.
A three-time Olympian with Greece in 1992, 1996, and 2000, Lorantos in an extremely experienced coach in the men’s game, with coaching roles at some of Greece’s top clubs, including Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, Panathinaikos, and Palaiou Falirou.
Recent years, however, have found Lorantos primarily engaged in service to the Greek national teams. Between 2017-2020, Lorantos headed up the U20 men’s team with a lot of success, including world and European titles in 2017, 2018, and 2019.
In 2020, he began working with the women’s senior national team, initially as the head coach. Under his stewardship, the Greece national team failed to qualify for the postponed Tokyo Olympic games, with his side finishing third in Trieste.
