Ferencvaros made a statement in the women’s OB I league with a decisive victory over reigning champions UVSE 13-6.
Fradi were in top form, dominating the game and leaving UVSE looking despondent. It’s the third time this season that FTC have beaten their Budapest rivals – pointing to perhaps a shifting of power in women’s water polo in the Hungarian capital.
Greta Gurisatti and Szonja Kuna each scored three times in a match that Fradi deserved to win. The hosts, once again, looked far more poised than their opponents, who let’s not forget, as a team, have a significantly younger average age.
Fradi’s offence was on point, scoring some truly special goals throughout the game. UVSE, on the other hand, struggled against Fradi’s defence, spearheaded by Boglarka Neszmely who made an impressive twelve saves.
Ferencvaros are now top of the league on 21pts after seven games. Alongside Dunaujvaros, they remain undefeated in all their games this season. UVSE are also on 21pts, having played a game extra.
The title race is far from over, with many games still to play, but Fradi’s victory tonight is a significant one. Not only did they beat UVSE for the third time this season, but they also defeated the reigning champions. This win will be a boost for Gyorgy Gerendas’s team, who will now believe that this is their year to finally win their first national title.
UVSE, meanwhile, will have to quickly move on from this defeat and focus on their next match against Dunaujvaros. They cannot afford to dwell on this loss if they want to defend their title.

Despite Ferencvaros’s initially stifling defence, the officials allowed the game to continue. Still, FTC dominated the opening period thanks to strong defensive play, including several key blocks and a fantastic penalty save by Boglarka Neszmely against Kinga Peresztegi-Nagy.
Peresztegi-Nagy had initially opened the scoring in the first place with a deflected shot, but Fradi twice hit back with silky extra-player moves converted from close range by Szonja Kuna and Dalma Domsodi.
Fradi finally continued to capitalise on their superiority in the second, and while they added crucial goals, it was their defence, bolstered by some spectacular stops from Boglarka Neszmely, that truly stymied UVSE’s offensive efforts.
Ferencvaros scored some spectacular goals. Panna Pocze made it 3-1 with a beautiful cross-cage finish; French international, Estelle Millot, clipped the post with her shot before finding the back of the net before Greta Gurisatti caught Alda Magyari off-guard with a pinpoint finish above the UVSE keeper’s head.
With an outstanding turn in the middle, Ezster Varro was the lone UVSE to break through the FTC defence in the quarter. That aside, UVSE struggled.
While UVSE scored twice in the third period, courtesy of Eszter Macsai’s well-executed penalty and Panna Tiba’s cool finish on the post, they simply could not find a rhythm.
Gyorgy Gerendas’ team were clinical on their extra-player finishes, with Domsodi adding her second – from the exactly same position she scored her first goal from in the first half – before Szonja Kuna powered home from the left-wing. A speculative snapshot from Anna Illes into the last minute of the quarter took the edge away from the game completely.
With a substantial advantage, Ferencvaros slowed down and ran out the clock, but continued to increase their lead. Gurisatti tallied two more goals, one from CF and the other from a penalty. Zsuszanna Mate, the captain of Ferencvaros, also converted from the 5-meter penalty line.
Late scores for UVSE by Panna Tiba, and Kata Hajdu had no impact on the score.
Yesterday’s Results, Matchday 8 Women’s OB I
Dorottya Szilagy led the line for her new club, Eger, in a game that was largely uneventful as they defeated Third District 12-6. Additionally, BVSC defeated GYVSE Gyor 16-10 to keep pressure on fourth-placed Eger, and Szentes defeated Szeged in the Csongrad derby thanks to hat-tricks from Viktoria Varga and Kata Macsai. Dunaujvaros, who are still to lose points this season, outplayed Tatabanya 20-7, led by Lili Dobi Dorina’s six goals.

The match between Eger and Third District at Bitskey was relatively uneventful, with Eger coming out on top with a solid 12-6 win. Both teams had finished joint third in the Hungarian Cup in December, but Eger proved to be the stronger team on the day.
Eger’s Dorottya Szilagy scored a hat-trick in the first half, helping her team build a lead in the first two periods of the game. By midway through the second period, Eger’s lead was 6-1.
Third District players Gerda Brezovszki and Henrietta Illes tried their best, but they were unable to find their rhythm and their team suffered their fifth defeat of the campaign.

Dunaujvaros continues to win in the OB I, leaving their opponents in the dust with a commanding 20-7 victory over the struggling Tatabanya.
If the game wasn’t a foregone conclusion at halftime (8-2), it certainly was after the third period, with the score at 15-3.
Summer acquisition, Lili Dobi Dorina, shone brightly in the pool, scoring an impressive six goals and leading her team to victory. Csenge Jonkl, Nora Sumegi, and Krisztina Garda also contributed to the win with four, three, and three strikes respectively.
Attila Mihok’s team’s impressive performance here sets the stage for their next big challenge, as they gear up to face off against the fierce UVSE team on Wednesday. Dunaujvaros already passed a big challenge against Eger, but only time will tell if they will continue their unbeaten run or whether UVSE will rise to the challenge and take them down.

The BVSC vs GYVSE Gyor match in Zuglo was a one-sided affair, with BVSC easily defeating their opponents 16-10. Mercedes Stieber’s team was in complete control from the start, with a six-unanswered score streak over the first and second quarters putting them ahead with a commanding 7-1 lead.
The Blue and Yellows from the capital were relentless in their attack, and Gyor struggled to keep up. Despite a double-score by Dorina Torok just after half-time that seemed to give Gyor a glimmer of hope, BVSC continued to dominate, with another scoring spree that included two of Alexa Gemes’s three goals in the game.
BVSC’s victory in this match keeps the pressure on fourth-placed Eger, as they face a short trip across the Danube to the Third District next, before travelling south to meet Szeged and Szentes. These are three winnable games that will give them the opportunity to continue their climb up the league table, setting the stage for a highly-anticipated match-up against Eger in mid-February.

The Csongrad derby on Friday night between Szentes and Szeged was intense but it was Szentes who emerged victorious, thanks to the spectacular hat-tricks from Viktoria Varga and Kata Macsai.
The Saints were in fine form, with their shots from the top proving to be too much for Szeged to handle. However, a big hero of the match was Szentes’ keeper, Janka Futsi Molnar, who made an impressive ten saves, denying Szeged any chance of a comeback.
Szentes took control of the match early on, with Varga and Macsai scoring two and one goal, respectively, in the first quarter, to give the Saints a 3-0 lead. Varga then completed her hat-trick before the end of the first half, putting Szentes up by four goals (5-1). From there, Szentes always enjoyed at least a four goal cushion.
Despite a slow start to the season, this victory—their third of the campaign—takes the Saints up to sixth place in the league. With the victory under their belt, Mark Matajsz’s team will be looking to build on this momentum and climb into the top half of the table.
