This weekend’s Hungarian women’s league saw the top three teams clinching victories in different ways. One team won by a huge margin, another won by the smallest possible margin, and the third team landed somewhere in between.
UVSE completed a domestic double over Eger (12-11) on Matchday 15, but the most important meeting between the two teams will be next Saturday in the Euro Cup. After a 12-12 draw in Eger last weekend, Marton Benczur and UVSE will aim to repeat their success in this matchday, which was boosted by a five-goal contribution from Panni Szegedi.
In the other matches, the best team in the league dominated the worst team, Szentes picked up more points on the road, and there were solid home victories for Dunaujvaros and Keruleti.

There was nothing to separate Eger and UVSE when they met seven days ago in the first leg of their Euro Cup semi-final, and practically the same could be said for their league meeting this weekend at Alfred Hajos. Also like last week’s meeting, UVSE trailed and fought back to take the lead in the last quarter, but this time, they held on (12-11).
The momentum in the game ebbed and flowed, the first exchanges saw a back and forth pattern on the scoreline, with Panni Szegedi finding two early strikes for the hosts, and Dorottya Szilagyi converting the same for Eger (4-4). The away side though, buoyed by their latest victory against Dunaujvaros, made the first breakaway, with a double-score from Dora Czigany leading her side to a 7-4 lead in the second period.
Despite strong signs of a resurgence from Ujpest in the third, they still were short of a goal heading into the concluding eight minutes (9-8). However, Szegedi added her fifth of the match to break even (9-9), before a double from Eszter Macsai equalised once more for 11-11. A goal with 2:26 left from the experienced arm of Gabriella Szucs proved to be decisive, as UVSE solidified the second position in the league.
Elsewhere, the other two teams in the top four had straight forward assignments.
As top faced bottom, Ferencvaros won their 15th consecutive OB I game with a 23-7 trouncing of Tatabanya. In that game, it’s hard to ignore the sublime contribution of Greta Gurisatti, whose nine goals now take her out of sight in the top-scorer charts (57 all season).
Champions League semi-finalists Dunaujvaros downed BVSC 12-5. With Attila Mihok’s team enjoying a leisurely start to the game, and building a strong advantage at the half-time interval (8-2), they now turn their attention to their trip to Nepliget next week to try to inflict Fradi’s first league defeat of the season.
Szentes continue to pick up decent points, and a 17-6 win in Gyor, led by five scores from local hero and veteran Anita Hevesi led the charge. The Saints now only find themselves two points behind fifth-placed BVSC. The Third District, meanwhile, picked up their second successive win, proving too strong for the travelling Szeged.
