The Greek national team is ready for the World Cup tournaments this month, and Alexia Kammenou has today announced her 15-player squad.
After weeks of preparations, Kammenou has assembled a strong team that will be looking to make an impact in both Rotterdam and Athens.
The Greek squad is currently one of the most competitive to break into, with a wealth of quality players vying for a place in the team. However, Kammenou has managed to put together an excellent group of players that will be looking to make their mark in the upcoming tournaments.
Eleven of the players in the squad hail from Olympiacos, including both goalkeepers, while the same number were members of Greece’s surprise European Championships silver medal-winning team.
However, there is one notable absences from the squad, with leading member of the Greece national team, Eleftheria Plevritou, along with her club teammate Ioanna Chydirioti both injured and requiring some rest
There are some fresh additions to the team, but no debuts. Nikoleta Eleftheriadou returns to the national team for the first time in a year, while Eleftheria Fountontou’s excellent goal-scoring form for Glyfada this season puts her well and truly back into Alexia Kammenou’s plans. Phoebe Angelidi has also been recalled to the team, joining her two Vouliagmeni teammates, Giannopoulou and Elliniadi, in making the squad.
More experience, less experimentation – Magyar World Cup team named
There are a number of players that have been dropped from the team for Rotterdam and Athens. Notably, Eleni Sotireli is not called up as one of Greece’s goalkeepers. Maria Patra, another member of the team in Split is also sidelined.
In terms of the younger players, Stamatina Kaifa and Marina Kotsioni from Vouliagmeni, Evdokia Tsimara and Nefeli Chaldaiou from Alimos, Dionysia Koureta from Patra and Ariadna Karampetsou from Ethnikos will all train with the U20s instead.
