Ferencvaros displayed excellent defensive play in the first derby in the 25th round of the Hungarian League.
Ferencvaros beat Szolnok 10:3 in the clash between two former European champions, played in Szolnok.
The other derby is scheduled for tomorrow, when OSC and Vasas will face off in Budapest.
Honved benefited from Szolnok’s loss. Honved water polo players demolished Miskolc 22:8 and narrowed the gap between them and Szolnok. A round before the end, only a point separates 4th-placed Szolnok and 5th-placed Honved, which has a realistic chance of reaching 4th place and qualifying for the playoffs for the title. In the 26th round, Honved won’t have a too demanding task, as it will play against Szeged. Szolnok will face LEN Euro Cup finalist Vasas, which hasn’t secured its spot in the playoffs yet.

OSC Budapest – Vasas on Thursday
The result of the derby Szolnok – Ferencvaros says everything. Ferencvaros’ defense was superb. The hosts scored the first goal in the match. Matyasz Pasztor netted for 1:0 in the third minute. However, after that, Ferencvaros “raised the wall” in front of its goal. Szolnok’s defense, commanded by goalkeeper Otto Josza was quite well in the first half, too. Still, Ferencvaros entered the second half with a 3:1 lead and added three goals in the first four minutes of the third period for 6:1. Szolnok’s silence lasted for 19 minutes. Two minutes and 13 seconds before the last break, Gergo Kovacs broke the deadlock for 2:6. Still, there was no way back for Szolnok. Ferencvaros dominated the final quarter and recorded a big 10:3 victory.
Denes Varga was the best scorer with three goals, but the goalkeepers should be mentioned. Szolnok’s Otto Josza saved 16 shots, while Ferencvaros’ Soma Vogel posted 10 saves.
Honved continued its chase for a spot in the playoffs with a convincing win over Miskolc. The team coached by Marton Szivos ruled the field from the first whistle. At halftime, the Budapest-based team had a 9:2 lead. In the next 16 minutes, Honved stretched the margin to 14 (22:8)
Eger beat PVSK in Pecs by one goal (13:12), although it had a five-goal lead three times during the middle two quarters – 8:3, 9:4 and 11:6. Kolozsi started PVSK’s comeback, by converting a man-up in the 24th minute (7:11). The hosts added three goals in the fourth period to cut the deficit to one (10:11) in the 30th minute. Eger doubled its advantage twice in the remaining time (12:10 and 13:11). Kereszturi made it 12:13 with 47 seconds left on the clock. PVSK had the ball in the last 20 seconds and a chance to equalize, but Csorba had his shot blocked in the very last second.
An encounter between Szeged and Szentes was very exciting, like the match in Pecs, but the spectators in Szeged saw only 13 goals. Szentes was in front from the first quarter. Szeged leveled at 1:1 , 4:4 and 5:5. The fifth hosts’ goal came in the 26th minute. Shortly after, Szentes rebuilt a 2-goal lead (7:5). A minute before the end, Szeged halved the distance (6:7), but couldn’t grab a point.
BVSC was too strong for UVSE.
