Honved won the bronze medal in the Hungarian Championships after a penalty shootout win (12:11) over Vasas in the third-place playoffs.
By winning bronze, Honved achieved its biggest success in the national league since 2009, when it was also 3rd place. Fourteen years ago, today’s Honved’s head coach Marton Szivos was one of the key players.
Honved will play in the qualifications for the LEN Champions League next season. Vasas will try to defend the recently won LEN Euro Cup.

Honved led and dictated the pace most of the time. Still, Vasas took control in the fourth quarter and went in front. Honved scored a late equalizer and the winner was decided in the penalty shootout.

Honved started excellently, earning 2:0 lead in the first two minutes. Vasas caught up with the visitors by the end of the first period. However, Vasas rebuilt a 2-goal advantage late into the second quarter (5:3) and at the beginning of the fourth period (7:5). After Honved’s seventh goal, Vasas netted two quick back-to-back goals and leveled at 7:7. Three minutes before the end, Ivan Nagaev scored his fourth goal, this time from a penalty shot and Vasas took the lead for the first time – 8:7. However, the hosts couldn’t keep a slim advantage. At 01:32, Zsombor Ekler leveled at 8:8 with an action goal.
In the last 90 seconds, both teams had one chance with a man-up each, but missed. Therefore, the penalty shootout decided which team would finish 3rd.
The shootout started badly for Honved, as Ekler missed in the first round. One of the heroes of Honved’s victory, goalkeeper Attila Decker saved a shot from Akos Konarik. The decision came in the 10th series when Vasas’ Balazs Erdely missed.

BVSC convincingly beat Szolnok and secured the third match in the 5th-place playoffs.
