Luca Cupido, the attacker of the national team of the USA, who left Barcelona recently, will continue his career in Italy. He moves to Sicily.
Ortigia, the third-placed team in Serie A1 this season, announced that Cupido was the club’s first reinforcement for the season 2023/24.
Cupido (28) was born in Italy to an Italian father and an American mother. He has dual Italian-American citizenship. He started playing water polo in Camogli. In 2013, he went to the USA for studies at UC Berkeley, where he played for the college water polo team. He was voted the best player of the 2018 NCAA Championships. Cupido returned to Italy in 2019. After a short spell at Recco, he returned to Rari Nantes Camogli. Last year, he left Camogli to join Barcelona.
Playing for the Italian junior and youth teams, he won two world and one European gold medal. Then, he was called up for the national team of the USA. As a member of Team USA, he played at the Olympic Games in 2016 and 2021, won two titles of the Pan American champion (2015 and 2019) and two silver medals in the World League.
