Fernandez (37) played for Barceloneta for almost his entire professional career, on two occasions. For the first time between 2004 and 2009. Then, he spent one season at Mataro and returned to Barceloneta in 2010. He started playing water polo in his hometown Madrid and was a member of Tres Cantos and Real Canoe in his youth and junior age.
Fernandez won a number of trophies playing for Barceloneta, including the Champions League in 2014.
Representing Spain, Fernandez clinched three silver medals – at the World Championships in 2019 and at the Europeans in 2018 and 2020.
