Alessandro Campagna, the head coach of Italy, didn’t wait long to select the team that will play at the World Championships in Fukuoka (July 14 – 30).
Shortly after the Italians returned from California, where they won silver in the World Cup, Campagna announced a 15-player list for the World Championships.
Italy went to California with 16 players. Two of them aren’t among the picked 15 for Fukuoka – Matteo Iocchi Gratta and Jacopo Alesiani.
A new name is Francesco Condemi, who moved from Ortigia to Pro Recco this summer.
Condemi will make its debut at the World Senior Championships, but he already played at the big tournament – at the European Championships in Split last year. Several weeks ago, Condemi participated in the World U20 Championships in Otopeni this summer but missed the World Cup.
Last year, Italy won silver at the Worlds in Budapest. Only one of the 13 players who reached the second step of the podium in the capital of Hungary isn’t on the roster for Fukuoka. It’s Iocchi Gratta.
Along with 12 silver medalists from Budapest and debutant Condemi, two world champions from 2019 – Vincenzo Renzuto Iodice and Alessandro Velotto – are on the list. This summer, Velotto returned to the national team after a two-year absence. Iodice played at the 2022 Europeans in Split.
