Attila Biro says there is ‘still a sense of loss’ from last year’s World Championship final defeat to the United States as he unveiled his squad for Fukuoka.
Twelve players from the team that played in the final on Margaret Island a year ago are in the roster for the upcoming World Championships in Fukuoka, with the only player not returning being substitute goalkeeper Edina Gangl, who is replaced by Boglarka Neszmely.
The two other additions to the team include two young superstars: FTC’s centre-forward Dalma Domsodi and UVSE’s Kata Hajdu. Panna Tiba and Vanda Baksa both traveled to play in North America with the Magyars, but neither will feature in the upcoming tournament in the Orient.
Hungary is considered outsiders to take a third World Championship gold medal, with a triumph in Fukuoka adding to their two previous successes in 1994 and 2005. Attila Biro’s team will need to navigate their way past Group D, which features three non-European teams: Canada, New Zealand, and the hosts Japan.
The Hungarian head coach told MVLSZ:
“no one had previously been able to squeeze the three-time Olympic champion American team as hard as we did in the final. However, we must first focus on the first match against the Canadians, and then, if we win it, then prepare for the biggest challenge, the quarter-finals against the Spaniards or the Dutch. For now, there is nothing more important than this, and I hope that in these matches I can enter what I believe to be the best team, with all members healthy.”
