Female Dutch players have always enjoyed playing their water polo in Spain, and another one is on her way to Catalonia.
World Champion and Best Goalkeeper at the 2023 Fukuoka World Championships, Laura Aarts, has today confirmed she will be playing for 2022/2023 Women's Champions League and Spanish League runners-up, CN Mataro. The 27-year-old will join the Maresme, and will feel at home straight away, joining up with her compatriots Simone Van de Kraats and Vivian Sevenich.
Aarts has intermittently played for Hungarian side Dunaujvaros alongside Dutch club USZC. As a teenager, she learnt her trade with the Ede Polar Bears.
However, a minor complication arises for Aarts. Her eligibility to compete in the Spanish League as a player for Mataro is limited, given that three foreign athletes, the two aforementioned Dutch players, and Italian winger Silvia Avegno, have already been enlisted by Dani Ballart's team. She will be available to play in Champions League only.
Notably, Mataro has already made a signing in the goalkeeper position during this transfer window. They acquired Mariona Terre from Catalunya to fill the void left by the retiring Elena Sanchez.
