Members of the Spanish men’s and women’s water polo national teams were received today by the King of Spain, Felipe VI, and his wife, Queen Letizia, in recognition of their summer successes at the World Championships in Fukuoka.
The national team squads were honored alongside several other aquatic-based athletes and were accompanied by the Minister of Culture and Sports, Miquel Iceta, and the president of the Spanish Swimming Federation (RFEN), Fernando Carpena.
Spain won medals in both competitions in Fukuoka; the women were narrowly defeated in the final by the Netherlands in a tense penalty shoot-out, while the men’s team failed to retain their world title from 2022 but extended their medal streak with a 9-6 win over Serbia in the Bronze medal game.
