The national teams of Argentina will replace the Brazilians at the water polo tournament at the 2023 World Championships Fukuoka (July 16 – 29).
The male and the female national Brazilian teams qualified for Fukuoka by winning silver medals at the Pan American Championships in Bauru. But, after the draw for the World Championships, the Brazilian Confederation of Aquatic Sports announced that both teams had withdrawn from the World Championships, mainly because of financial reasons.
According to the rules, the next highest-ranked teams in the continental qualifications were invited to fill a vacancy. Argentina finished 3rd in the men’s and women’s tournaments in Bauru.
The national federation of Argentina accepted the invitation. World Aquatics announced that Argentina would play in the Brazilians’ places at the World Championships in Japan.
The male team of Argentina will play in the group with Croatia, Hungary, and host Japan. The women’s opponents in the first phase will be Greece, Italy, and South Africa.
Argentina men debuted at the World Championships in Kazan in 2015 and placed 16th. After that, they failed to qualify. The women’s team of Argentina played for the first time at the 2022 Worlds in Budapest. They advanced to the cross-over round and finished in 12th place in the end.
