Barceloneta and Marseille completed their participation in the Golden Bears Invitational tournament in Berkeley with two wins each.
On Day 2, Marseille beat the Olympic Club, and Barceloneta defeated the California Golden Bears.
After a 5:21 loss to Barceloneta on the opening day, the Olympic club displayed a better performance in the game against the French champion. Still, Marseille recorded a convincing 18:13 (6:3, 4:4, 3:4, 5:2) victory over the Olympic Club. The French earned a 7:3 lead early in the second period. The team from San Francisco cut the deficit to 7:8 during this quarter, and trailed 11:13 before the final eight miutes. However, the French achieved a comfortable victory. Once again, Thomas Vernoux and Alexandre Bouet were the leaders of Marseille’s attack. Vernoux scored six goals, and Bouet four goals. Colin Mulchay and Marcus Longton netted three each for the Olympic Club.
Five goals separated the rivals in the last match of the tournament, too. Barceloneta beat the California Golden Bears 14:9 (5:0, 5:3, 3:3, 1:3). Barceloneta’s explosive start set the tone of the encounter. The Spaniards’ defense, commanded by goalkeeper Unai Aguirre, did a great job in the first half. Their offense was equally impressive, allowing them to build a 9:1 advantage midway through the second quarter. In the rest of the match, the Bears narrowed the gap. Bernat Sanahuja was the top scorer of the winning team with three goals. Burian, Tahull, and Vigvari found the hosts’ net twice. Beso Akhvlediani scored three goals for the home team.
This match was special for two players as they faced the teams they had recently left. One of Barceloneta’s additions this summer is Max Casabela, who joined the Spanish team after graduating from the University of California. On the other side, Tomas Perrone said goodbye to Barceloneta this summer to become a student at the University of California and a Bears player.
