Barceloneta opened the season by winning the 20th edition of the Copa Catalunya (Catalonian Cup).
In the first two decades of this regional competition, Barceloneta won the trophy 18 times. Besides the reigning Spanish champions, only two clubs are on the winners’ list: Terrassa and Sabadell, which triumphed in 2012 and 2016, respectively.
The Final Four was held in Barcelona. Barceloneta and Sabadell faced off in the gold medal match for the fourth consecutive year. Barceloneta, guided by a new head coach, Fran Fernandez, clinched its 10th Copa Catalunya in a row with a 17:10 win.
Previously in the semifinals, Barceloneta downed Terrassa 17:4. Sabadell defeated Barcelona despite a slow start. Barcelona had a 4:1 advantage after the first quarter, but Sabadell came back into the match in time and achieved a 12:8 victory.
The rivals were in a neck-and-neck race during the first half of the final. Barceloneta took an opening 2:0 lead. Still, Sabadell was able to chase the favorite for a while and equalized five times (from 2:2 until 6:6). Vince Vigvari gave Barceloneta a 7:6 lead from a penalty shot shortly before halftime. The young Hungarian doubled his team’s advantage with an action goal early in the third quarter. Barceloneta added three goals in a row in the following several minutes and jumped to 11:6. Sabadell didn’t recover from a 0:5 series. By the, end the title-holder extended the margin to seven, 17:10.
Bernat Sanahuja and Vince Vigvari were Barceloneta’s power engines in the final, scoring five goals each. Gergely Burian added three. Barroso scored three for Sabadell.
Barcelona defeated Terrassa 19:14 in the bronze-medal game.
