Beijing has been chosen to be the host of the 2029 World Aquatics Championships, World Aquatics announced today.
The World Aquatics Championships will take place in China for the second time. The 2011 Worlds were organized in Shanghai.
China is the only Asian country that has won a medal at the water polo tournaments at the World Championships. The female team took silver in Shanghai in 2011 after a narrow 8:9 loss to Greece in the final.
This will be the seventh time that the World Championships will be held in Asia, following the ones in Fukuoka (2001 and 2023), Shanghai (2011), Gwangju (2019), Doha (2024), and Singapore (2025).
China has a strong track record of successfully hosting major aquatics events, having organized over 100 such competitions, 37 of which were in Beijing, World Aquatics announced, among other things.
Beijing is also the only city to have hosted both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games in 2008 and 2022, respectively.
The exact dates of the 2029 Championships haven’t been determined yet.
After the ongoing World Championships in Doha and before the 2029 edition, Singapore and Budapest will organize the WCH in 2025 and 2027, respectively.
