On Saturday, Hungary returned to the world throne and won its fourth title of the world champion.
It’s interesting that all of Hungary’s titles are linked with the number three. They won the gold medal at the First World Championships in Belgrade in 1973. The following crown came in 2003 in Barcelona, the third in 2013, again in Barcelona and the fourth in 2023.
Ten years they were passed between the third and the fourth crown. Only two players who were on the roster in Barcelona ten years ago, clinched gold in Fukuoka – Denes Varga and Marton Vamos.
Today, the Hungarian Water Polo Federation published a post on its social networks and revealed a Facebook correspondence several months after Hungary’s triumph in Barcelona in 2013. One of the two involved will never forget it. Surely, it was a wind at his back.
In December 2013, Vince Vigvari, who debuted for the senior national team this summer, sent a Facebook message to Marton Vamos and wrote him:
“Hi, Marci, I am Vince Vigvari, you are my role model, and I wish you good luck. I am 10 years old and I also play water polo.”
Marton Vamos answered him and motivated 10-year-old Vince. Vamos also wished much success to Vince Vigvari. He told him to work hard and honestly, then that work will surely bear fruits.
Vince Vigvari succeeded. On Saturday, one of the best young players in the world at the moment was at the highest step of the podium together with his role model.
Don’t forget; it was Vigvari’s second world gold this summer. He clinched the title with the Hungarian national team at the World U20 Championships held in June in Otopeni.
Besides, one of Vince’s teammates in Fukuoka was his brother Vendel.
