Greece and Hungary will play in the final of the 1st World U16 Championships for boys in Volos. The same two nations advanced to the final in the tournament for girls
Hungary advanced to the final after beating Serbia in a very exciting semifinal match. There was no winner after regular time (12:12), and Hungary celebrated the victory after a penalty shootout (17:15).
Greece beat Montenegro. The hosts produced a great comeback to qualify for the final. They trailed by two goals at the finish of the third period. Still, they made a 6:0 series, and went ahead (15:11). Montenegro scored just two consolation goals after that. Greece recorded a 15:13 win.
The boys from Japan and the USA will play in the final of the Gold Round (9th-16th place). Poland and Georgia will battle in the gold-medal match in the Silver Round.

Hungary led just once in regular time (4:3), Serbia was a team that controlled the match for most of the time, but Hungary emerged as the winner in a thrilling contest.
At halftime, the sides were tied at 6:6. Serbia opened the third period with two goals and went to 8:6. The Serbs maintained the difference until the end of the quarter and continued dictating the pace after the last break.
Boskovic stretched the margin to three early in the final period (11:8). But Hungary responded with three goals in two minutes and leveled at 11:11. Gladovic gave Serbia a 12:11 lead. Toth made it 12:12 with 67 seconds left on the clock. Nobody found the net in the last minute, and the thriller entered the penalty shootout. The decision came in the third round when Hungary’s goalkeeper Borbely saved a shot from Novakovic.
Interestingly, seven days ago, Hungary beat Serbia in a penalty shootout in the final of the World U18 Championships in Belgrade.

Greece recorded the win in a similar way as in yesterday’s match against Croatia. A recipe for a win was – a good opening and an excellent finish. The first and the fourth quarter made the difference.
The first quarter belonged to the Greeks, but Montenegro started coming back after the first break. The Montenegrins leveled in the middle of the second quarter (6:6), and shortly after earned a slim lead. At halftime, they had a 9:8 advantage. Montenegro doubled its advantage in the third quarter (11:9). The Greeks saved the best for the end. Seven seconds before the end of the third, Mitrakis converted a man-up for 10:11. Greece scored five straight goals in less than four minutes and built a 15:11 advantage. Montenegro halved the deficit at the finish, but it couldn’t come back after the hosts’ 6:0 series.

Croatia handled better in the first half, but Spain’s attack in the third period was outstanding. The Spaniards entered the final quarter with an 11:10 lead. Midway through the fourth period, they doubled their advantage. Croatia reduced the gap to 11:12 immediately. Still, Spain managed to keep a minimal advantage in an exciting finish.
Italy led throughout the match against Turkey, which equalized only once (5:5). Italy dictated the pace and built a safe 12:8 advantage before the last quarter.
