Most of the best European men’s national teams have begun their preparations for the continental championships in Belgrade. The Italians will gather only next week, because Serie A1 is still ongoing. The first half of the Italian League will conclude on Saturday with the 13th round, and the 12th-round matches have been played over three days (Monday – Wednesday).
The visiting teams were quite successful.
Pro Recco and Brescia achieved convincing wins. Pro Recco beat Olympic Roma 18:6 in the capital with four goals from Rino Buric and three from Giacomo Cannella.
Brescia hosted Trieste in the derby of the round. However, Brescia left no chance to the visitors. Trieste kept up with the Champions League club for more than a quarter. In the 10th minute, Trieste trailed 3:4. Brescia then produced a 6:0 run in less than four minutes for a comfortable 10:3 lead. The hosts maintained the difference until the end. Vincenzo Dolce and Alessandro Balzarini contributed four goals each to Brescia’s 17:10 victory. Brescia’s goalkeeper, Tommaso Baggi Necchi, performed well. He saved two penalty shots.
Savona beat Telmar 18:13. The Sicilians fought hard, even though they never took the lead. At the first break, the teams were tied at 4:4. A neck-and-neck race continued until the middle of the third period, when Telimar trailed 10:11. Savona, with unstoppable Oliver Leinweber, who scored 7 times, controlled the match in the final 12 minutes.
An encounter between Roma Vis Nova and Canottieri, played in Rome, was quite interesting. Roma Vis Nova had a 3-goal advantage at halftime (6:3). Canottieri ruled the field in the third period and entered the fourth quarter leading 8:6. The hosts halved their deficit twice during the final period. Still, Canottieri collected all three points with a 10:8 win.
De Akker defeated Salerno 15:9 at home. Salerno had a 5:3 and 6:4 lead in the first half. Then, De Akker took control and, led by Balazs Erdelyi (who scored five goals in the game), went on a stunning 7:0 run, which put the hosts on the right track.
Posillipo earned an away victory over Ortigia, 17:14. The Naples-based side built an 11:6 lead in the first half. However, the Sicilians didn’t surrender. Ortigia cut the deficit early in the fourth period (13:14), but Posillipo replied with three straight goals and secured the victory.
