The headline of the day in Lima is that Canada have beaten the United States in the Intercontinental Cup. Elsewhere, Brazil beat their local neighbours Argentina 8-3 today (the goals courtesy of Melani Palaro Diaz (3), Ana Beatriz (2), Leticia Belorio (2) and Sam Rezende), while Cuba enjoyed a rare win over Colombia as Lisabeth Santana’s quadruple scores and Dalia Grau’s Hat-trick was enough to lead their side to the win.
Canada 6-5 United States (1-1, 1-1, 0-1, 4-1)
Canada: J. Gaudreault, K. McKee, B. McDowell, G. Patenaude, A. Amororsa, G. Sohi 1, V. Bakoc 1, D. Guevremont, H. McKelvey 2, K. Christmas, K. Paul, S. La Roche 1, S. Browne
United States: A. Longan, A. Pearson, R. Gazzaniga, E. Woodhead, G. Rossi, A. Knepper, J. Bonaguidi, J. Flynn 1, E. Ausmus 1, M. Netherton, T. Smith 2, A. Stryker 1, C. Carpenter
Canada’s experience and quality was good enough to beat a very young United States side in Lima today. While seeing the United States Women’s National Team lose a match is a rarity, the result was not totally unexpected given the side that the USA is fielding. It would not be surprising if Ethan Demato’s development team suffered a similar fate when they meet Australia.
Hayley McKelvey bagged a brace, while the quality of Gurpreet Sohi, Kindred Paul, Shae La Roche and the ever-improving Verica Bakoc was too much to handle for the USA.
In truth, these are exactly the kind of games that these young American players desperately need. Their young stars, such as Jenna Flynn, Emily Ausmus, Anna Pearson, Taylor Smith and Ava Stryker, who have impressed all week, will take a lot away from these international experiences.
