Spanish champion Barceloneta will have to find a new head coach.
Today, the club announced that Chus Martin, who has been Barceloneta head coach since 2013, would leave the club after the end of the season.
“Chus Martín, the best coach we can have, leaves Barceloneta at the end of the season, for personal reasons, to start a new stage and explore other options.
Our club is his home. We can only support him and respect his decision, hoping to welcome him back as soon as possible.”
Now, however, is not the time to get emotional or to give him the recognition he so much deserves. We leave that for later. It’s time to focus on the two most important commitments of the season: the League play-offs and the Champions League Final 8…. The best tribute we could pay to Chus would be to take both titles home”, Barceloneta announced, among the other things.
Martin (51) played for all age categories of Barceloneta. He has been a head coach in the last eight years. Before that, he was an assistant coach to Santi Fernandez for seven years.
He led Barceloneta, as the head coach, to numerous trophies, including the title of the European champion in the season 2013/14, when the Champions League Final Six was played in Barcelona. Barceloneta won the LEN Super Cup in the same year.
Martin says for Spanish media that he doesn’t have any offers for a new job and that he is focused on finishing the season with Barceloneta. Explaining the decision to leave the club, he says that he needs a change after 42 years spent at the club.
According to unofficial sources, Martin’s successor could be Toni Esteller (66), who achieved big successes as Barcelona head coach. Esteller won two LEN Trophies (LEN Euro Cup) with Barcelona (1995 and 2004).
