A week after the announcement of Filip Filipovic's retirement, another Serbian water polo legend, Branislav Mitrovic, has decided to conclude his illustrious career at the end of this season.
Although Mitrovic's club career was relatively modest compared to many of his Serbian peers, he leaves behind a legacy as a two-time Olympic champion from the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games.
Over a span of twenty-two years, Mitrovic played primarily in Serbia and Hungary, representing clubs such as Partizan, Ferencvaros, Eger, OSC, and Vasas. His last club stint was with EN Tourcoing in France. He was integral to Partizan's team that secured three consecutive domestic league and cup doubles and won the Euro Cup with Partizan in the 2009-10 season and with Vasas in the 2022-23 season.
Although initially overlooked in his early years with the Serbian national team, Mitrovic concluded his career richly decorated, boasting four European Championship gold medals alongside his Olympic achievements.
At 39, Mitrovic was actively involved with the national team as recently as this January at the European Championships.
According to sources in Serbia, Mitrovic had hoped to postpone his retirement until after his third Olympic Games in Paris. However, after discussions with Serbian national team head coach, Uros Stevanovic, it was determined that this would not be feasible.
