Denes Varga is back in European water polo.
One of the best water polo players ever signed a contract with A-Polo Sport Management, currently the top water polo club in Georgia.
In the summer of 2024, Varga, the winner of the 2019 Total Player Award, ended his career with the Hungarian national team and bid farewell to Ferencvaros. However, he didn’t fully retire. Since then, Varga has played for the Los Angeles Athletic Club at the final tournament of the 2025 USA Water Polo League season and for Apoel in Cyprus.
The move to A-Polo Sport Management appears to be a more ambitious step in his career compared to his brief stints in the USA and Cyprus.
A-Polo Sport Management is a relatively new club that won the title in the 2025 Georgian Championships, breaking Dinamo Tbilisi’s long-standing dominance.
A-Polo competed in the Euro Cup Qualifications this season, but it failed to qualify for the Group Stage.
However, the Georgian team will participate in the second round of the Conference Cup. The Georgians have been drawn into a challenging Group C alongside De Akker (Italy), Honved (Hungary), Montpellier (France), and Primorje (Croatia). The tournament will be held in Montpellier in February. With Varga on the roster, A-Polo Sport Management’s chances of reaching the next stage have significantly increased (the top two teams will advance to the third phase)
Denes Varga, 38, has played for several prestigious clubs: Ujpest, Vasas, Primorje, Szolnok, and Ferencvaros. He has won three Champions League titles—one with Szolnok and two with Ferencváros. His greatest successes with the Hungarian national team include two Olympic medals (gold in 2008 and bronze in 2021), two gold medals at the World Championships, and one European title. He won numerous individual awards.
